Flight Instructor Certification Courses
The Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI)-Initial course provides ground and flight instruction to instrument rated commercial pilots that desire a basic flight instructor certificate. Upon completion of this training, CFI candidates will be proficient in explaining all knowledge tasks and demonstrating, while simultaneously explaining, all practical tasks in the CFI practical test.
As part of the training, CFI candidates will demonstrate their ability to prepare and present preflight lessons on selected flight maneuvers. These lesson plans will use the format depicted in FAA’s AC 60-14, Aviation Instructor’s Handbook, and will be based on references listed in the FAA Practical Test Standards (PTS). Each lesson should be developed as if the CFI candidate was preparing to introduce a subject, procedure or maneuver to a private pilot student. The lesson plan will include notes for the instructor’s use while briefing the student.
The lesson plans will consist of flight lessons that will be flown in accordance with FAA PTS. During these lessons, the CFI candidate will instruct the instructor on a given flight maneuver, covering what the maneuver is, why to practice it, and how it is done. Common student errors will be discussed at that time. Initially the CFI candidate will become familiar with right seat airplane operations and become proficient in all required maneuvers. Spins will be discussed, practiced and logged. Subsequent lessons will include practicing teaching in a complex aircraft in preparation for the practical test.
The CFI candidate will also prepare lessons for use in a ground school setting to ensure knowledge and compliance with certification standards of the various tasks required by the FAA.
Instructors looking to teach instrument students may add the CFI-Instrument rating to their CFI certificates. CFI-Instrument candidates will prepare, practice and demonstrate competence in conducting ground and dual flight instrument instruction. They will complete instrument training assignments in the same format as the CFI-Initial course.
Likewise instructors looking to teach multi-engine students may add the Multi-Engine Instructor rating to their CFI certificates. The Multi-Engine Instructor candidate will prepare, practice and demonstrate competence in conducting ground and dual multi-engine flight instruction. They will complete multi-engine training assignments in the same format as the CFI-Initial course.
